Business Model Canvas (Osterwalder & Pigneur)

As management consultants working with software-driven companies, we are exposed to mature as well as un-tested business models. Knowing one from the other is critical in determining what assistance we shall provide.

In general we rarely work with startups. We mainly work with mature companies, who are in the process of starting up new activities.

The big difference between the two scenarios is primarily the funding aspect.

The mature company can afford engaging management consultants to help them in the search process of a new scalable business model. Startups seldom have the funds to do that.

Steve Blank just released a new book with practical help for startups:

The Startup Owner’s Manual: The Step-By-Step Guide for Building a Great Company

For the promotion of the book he has produced a set of videos, which are worth while watching.

The first one is on the difference between a startup and an established company. Startups are not smaller versions of big companies, so don’t try to be like them.
