IBM to acquire Vivisimo

IBM have announced its intent to acquire Vivisimo, a recognized leader in federated discovery and navigation software for big data. The acquisition aims to accelerate IBM’s efforts to help clients integrate, navigate, and analyze the full variety, velocity and volume of big data.

Vivisimo brings a decade of experience and innovation in data navigation and visualization technologies for both structured and unstructured data, making it easier for business users to get value from all of their data. The unique software expands IBM’s big data platform with new federated data capabilities that can provide a single point of access to disparate data sources, extracting relevant information and providing ad hoc analysis without moving the data.

This strategic acquisition brings to IBM, and the big data portfolio, 140 customers in industries spanning government, life sciences, manufacturing, electronics, consumer goods and financial services. Founded in 2000, Vivisimo is headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with offices in Virginia, the UK and France and has 120 employees worldwide.

Vivisimo will join IBM’s big data portfolio within Information Management led by Arvind Krishna, General Manager.

IBM is also announcing that it is expanding its big data platform to support multiple Apache Hadoop distributions in addition to its own, beginning with Cloudera. IBM will certify on Cloudera’s Hadoop distribution with IBM’s big data platform helping clients protect their investment in Cloudera, while benefiting from IBM’s enterprise platform capabilities.
